Low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus. Folate also contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism, normal psychological function and normal blood formation. A long term intake of folic acid above 1000mcg for adults may hide a deficiency of B12. However the risk of masking B12 deficiency is not an issue when using the L-methylfolate form.
